GUIDE · OSAKA WITH KIDS, FIRST VISIT
First time in Osaka with kids: Namba, Umeda or Tennoji?
Osaka has two centres — Kita (Umeda) and Minami (Namba) — with Tennoji, the USJ side to the west, and quiet residential areas around them. You can get around by train from anywhere, but with kids, one fewer change of train or being able to get back to your room right after dinner makes a real difference to how tired everyone is. We run homes in Osaka; here's what each area is like, with real travel times from our homes.
The short answer
- If in doubt, base yourself somewhere with a short, direct train to Namba. From Namba there are direct lines to Kansai Airport, Nara and Kobe-Sannomiya, and one subway line to Umeda and Shin-Osaka.
- Two or more days at USJ: stay near Nishikujo. Early or late flights at Kansai Airport: stay on the Nankai or JR Hanwa lines (Namba, Tengachaya, Tennoji). Lots of day trips to Kyoto: the Umeda side is handiest.
- We have 123 family homes (4–9 guests) in Osaka. Half of them are within about 6 minutes of Namba by train, and within about 19 minutes of USJ (times by area are in the table below).
- We have almost nothing around Umeda (1 within 1.5 km of JR Osaka Station). If you want to stay in Umeda, a hotel there is the better fit.
- Two adults and one child for a night or two: a hotel works fine. Five or more people, separate bedrooms, laundry, or three nights or more: a whole home suits you better.
Osaka's six areas compared
| Area | What it's like | Good for families because | Direct trains to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Namba (Minami) | Dotonbori, Shinsaibashi, Kuromon Market. The food and shopping hub, busy until late | You can walk back after dinner; many lines, easy to get anywhere | Kansai Airport (Nankai), Nara (Kintetsu), Kobe-Sannomiya (Hanshin), Umeda & Shin-Osaka (Midosuji Line) |
| Umeda (Kita) | Osaka Station, station malls, department stores, offices | Easy to reach Kyoto and Shin-Osaka (shinkansen); rainy days in the station malls | Kyoto (JR Kyoto Line, Hankyu Kyoto Line), Shin-Osaka & Namba (Midosuji Line), Kansai Airport (JR Kansai Airport Rapid, Haruka) |
| Tennoji & Shinsekai | Abeno Harukas, Tennoji Park (Tenshiba), Tennoji Zoo, Tsutenkaku | The zoo and park are within walking distance of the station | Kansai Airport (JR Kansai Airport Rapid, Haruka), Nara (JR Yamatoji Line), Kyoto (Haruka), Namba & Umeda (Midosuji Line) |
| Nishikujo (USJ side) | Old downtown and residential streets, not a nightlife area | Two stops to USJ on the JR Yumesaki Line | USJ (JR Yumesaki Line), Namba & Kobe-Sannomiya (Hanshin Namba Line), Osaka Station (JR Loop Line) |
| Tsuruhashi | Shopping streets and markets full of yakiniku restaurants, Ikuno Koreatown | Plenty of places for dinner; easy to get to Nara | Nara (Kintetsu), Namba (Sennichimae Line, Kintetsu) |
| Tengachaya & Kishinosato-Tamade | Residential streets and local shopping arcades | Easier to find whole houses; easy to get to Kansai Airport | Kansai Airport & Namba (Nankai; Rapi:t and airport express stop at Tengachaya), Nipponbashi & Kitahama (Sakaisuji Line) |
These are the main lines only. Check the actual route from each home's nearest station.
How far are our homes from the main sights?
For each area: how many of our family homes (4–9 guests) are there, and the train time from their nearest stations (shortest to longest).
Areas with the most family homes on this site: Tengachaya (36), Tsuruhashi (16), Tennoji (13), Namba (11).
| Area (centre station) | Homes | Namba | USJ | Kansai Airport | Kyoto |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Namba (Nankai Namba) | 11 homes | 1–3 min | 13–20 min | 44–48 min | 40–54 min |
| Umeda (JR Osaka) | 1 home | 11 min | 17 min | 56 min | 32 min |
| Tennoji (JR Tennoji) | 13 homes | 2–9 min | 15–20 min | 42–53 min | 43–54 min |
| Nishikujo (JR Nishikujo) | 10 homes | 6–8 min | 5–7 min | 52–63 min | 32–36 min |
| Tsuruhashi (Tsuruhashi) | 16 homes | 5–7 min | 18–28 min | 51–58 min | 37–46 min |
| Tengachaya (Tengachaya) | 36 homes | 4–8 min | 14–26 min | 40–44 min | 42–58 min |
Each area covers homes within 1.5 km (straight line) of its centre station; a home that falls in two areas is counted in the closer one. Times are by train from each home's nearest station and don't include the walk to the station.
First time in Osaka with kids: how to choose
- USJ is the focus (two days or more) → around Nishikujo. Two stops to USJ on the JR Yumesaki Line, and a direct Hanshin train to Namba.
- Exploring the city and walking Dotonbori in the evening → within walking distance of Namba. Our guide to whole homes near Namba weighs this against space.
- Kids who want a zoo or a park → Tennoji. Tennoji Zoo and Tennoji Park (Tenshiba) are a walk from the station.
- Early or late flight at Kansai Airport → the Nankai Line (Namba, Tengachaya) or JR Tennoji. Both have direct trains to the airport.
- Big group, want a large house, quiet evenings → residential areas such as Tengachaya, Kishinosato-Tamade or Tsuruhashi, with a direct train to Namba.
- Also visiting Kyoto or Nara → for Kyoto, direct trains from Umeda (JR Kyoto Line, Hankyu Kyoto Line) or Tennoji (Haruka); for Nara, from Namba or Tsuruhashi (Kintetsu) or Tennoji (JR Yamatoji Line). Spending two or more nights in Kyoto? Splitting your stay between the two cities is worth considering.
💡 With kids, the number of train changes matters most. Before you book, check whether there's a direct train from the home's nearest station to the places you want to go.
What to check before booking with kids
- Bedrooms and bedding: beds or futons (Japanese floor bedding) vary by home. Many parents of little ones like futon rooms — nobody rolls off a bed.
- Washing machine: 118 of our 123 family homes in Osaka have one.
- Bathtub: 110 of 123 have a bathtub.
- Stairs: 10 of 123 have an elevator. Most houses have stairs inside, so with a stroller or toddlers, check which floor the bedrooms are on.
- Counting guests: whether babies and toddlers count depends on the home. Ask before booking and we'll confirm.
- Neighbourhood etiquette: most whole homes are in residential streets. Please keep voices down outdoors at night and sort your rubbish.
- Arriving early: if nobody stayed the night before, early check-in may be possible (we'll let you know the day before). Our support team answers questions during your stay, 9:00–23:00 Japan time.
