GUIDE · USJ WITH KIDS
Staying near Universal Studios Japan with kids: hotel or whole home?
For a USJ trip, the big choice is whether to sleep right outside the park or in a home a short train ride away. Neither is always right — it depends on how many of you there are, how long you're staying and how old the kids are. We run homes in Osaka; here's how we'd decide.
The short answer
- Two adults and one or two kids, one or two nights, all-in on the park: an official hotel at the park gate is the easiest choice — you can walk in.
- Five or more people, two families, three nights or more, or you want to do laundry and eat in: a whole home a short train ride from USJ suits you better, and everyone stays under one roof.
- We have 52 homes with easy access to USJ — about 5–15 minutes by train from their nearest station — and the largest sleeps 16.
- None of our homes is within walking distance of the park. If walking to the gate matters most, book an official hotel.
Official hotel or whole home: what's the difference?
| Official hotels at the park | Whole homes (this site) | |
|---|---|---|
| To the park | Walking distance | about 5–15 minutes by train |
| Guests per room | Mostly 2–4 per room (varies by hotel) | Up to 16 in one home |
| Bigger groups | Split across several rooms | Separate bedrooms, same house |
| Washing machine | Usually not in the room (laundry varies by hotel) | 51 of 52 have one |
| Meals | Restaurants in and around the hotel | Check each home for a kitchen; easy to buy food at supermarkets and eat in |
| How price works | Per room (varies by guests and dates) | Per home (varies by guests and dates) plus a cleaning fee |
| Best for | Small groups, short stays, park-focused | 5+ guests, longer stays, two families, seeing Osaka too |
Rooms and facilities differ between official hotels — check each hotel's own website.
A whole home suits families who…
- are travelling with grandparents or as two families and want to stay together
- have little ones who go to bed early, while the adults relax in another room (choose a home with separate bedrooms)
- are staying three nights or more and want to wash clothes and pack light
- will also explore Namba, Dotonbori, the Kaiyukan aquarium or Tennoji on other days
- would rather eat in some evenings than eat out every night
Getting to USJ by train
- The park's station is Universal City on the JR Yumesaki Line; the gates are a short walk from the station.
- Change to the Yumesaki Line at Nishikujo. It's two stops: Nishikujo → Ajikawaguchi → Universal City.
- Nishikujo is also on the JR Osaka Loop Line and the Hanshin Namba Line, which runs straight through to Osaka-Namba and Kobe-Sannomiya.
- From our USJ-area homes it's about 5–15 minutes by train from the nearest station to USJ; 6 are confirmed to have a direct train with no change.
💡 Universal City station gets very crowded right after the park closes. With small children, leave a little early or take a break inside the park before heading back.
What to check before booking with kids
- Stairs: 11 of 52 have an elevator. Most houses have stairs inside, so with a stroller or toddlers, check which floor the bedrooms are on.
- Bedding: rooms with futons (Japanese floor bedding) mean nobody rolls off a bed — many parents with little ones like that. Each home lists its beds and futons.
- Car: 9 of 52 have private parking. Check size limits on each home's page.
- Counting guests: whether babies and toddlers count depends on the home. Ask before booking and we'll confirm.
- Arriving early: if nobody stayed the night before, early check-in may be possible (we'll let you know the day before).
