Walk up Kinukake-no-michi toward Kinkakuji and you pass stone walls under trees. Kitano Tenmangu is the shrine of learning and a plum blossom spot — from February to March the plum garden opens, and the air mixes plum with roasted tea. Nearby Kamishichiken is Kyoto's oldest geisha district; at dusk you might catch shamisen practice through the lattice windows. Ryoanji's rock garden is a place to sit and do nothing. On the way home, Super Colemo Senbon-Nakadachi is about 2 min on foot for seasonal vegetables and tofu; Yakiniku Ebata about 2 min; Sushi Gion Emon about 5 min. Cherry blossoms in spring, red leaves in autumn — this area feels the seasons. 🛏Rooms 1F: Living/dining + Japanese room (2 single futons); 2 more single futons can be laid in the living area. Kitchen, bath (shower + hinoki tub), washroom, washer-dryer, toilet. 2F: Lounge + Western room (2m bed) + Japanese room (3 single futons); bath (shower), sink, toilet. 3 bedrooms total, sleeps 9 — comfortable for families or groups. 🛋Amenities Appliances: internet TV, double-door fridge, IH cooktop, coffee maker (coffee included), rice cooker, microwave, kettle, washer-dryer, drying rack. Kitchen: pots, dishes, dish soap. Bath: hinoki tub, 2 showers, hairdryer. Hotel-grade disposables (per guest): toothbrush & toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap, tissues, toilet paper, bath/face towels, slippers, hangers, first-aid kit. ⚠️Note No elevator in this house — please consider if you have large luggage or limited mobility. Ideal for families and groups who want a Kyoto machiya base for the northwest temples.

The little villa is truly a hidden gem, captivating with its authenticity and beauty. It is within walking distance of Nijo Castle and the Imperial Palace. The immediate area is not particularly touristy and seems a bit unremarkable, but Kyoto is full of small and large surprises. When you go for a walk, you often discover lesser-known but extremely charming shrines, parks, and much more. The bus connections are good. A few minor criticisms: The music system did not work during our stay, and it seems that this is intentional by the owner. The duvets are too thick for my taste, and the washing machine is entirely in Japanese and not intuitive to use. Unfortunately, there is no instruction manual. However, the positive aspects far outweigh the negatives, and I would recommend the villa without hesitation.
