Kosetsu Museum of Art
香雪美術館
Nakanoshima Kosetsu Museum of Art shows the collection of Murayama Ryohei (1850–1933), founder of the Asahi Shimbun newspaper: Japanese and East Asian swords and armour, Buddhist art, calligraphy, painting and tea utensils. It opened in 2018 on the 4th floor of Festival Tower West, the second branch after the main museum in Kobe.
It is a hushed, modern gallery above the city, good for slow looking. A permanent highlight is a full-size copy of the Gen'an tea room from Murayama's house, together with its garden path, lit to suggest the changing seasons.
What to see and do
A full-size re-creation of the tea room at the Murayama house (an Important Cultural Property), with its roji garden path.
The story of the collector and of the newspaper, which started on Nakanoshima.
Portraits and figures from the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, with works by Georges de La Tour, Tintoretto and Millet.
Open until 19:00 on Fridays during the autumn show, with curator talks on some Fridays at 17:00.
