Nakanoshima Museum of Art, Osaka
大阪中之島美術館
The Nakanoshima Museum of Art is the black box you can't miss on Nakanoshima island, between the Dojima and Tosabori rivers. It opened in 2022 and holds Osaka's city collection of modern and contemporary art and design. It stages several large exhibitions a year, from European masters to Japanese designers.
Inside, the dark outside gives way to a tall, bright atrium crossed by long escalators, with galleries on the upper floors. The lawn and the giant cat sculpture on the terrace are free to visit. With the river walks and the old Nakanoshima buildings nearby, it makes an easy half-day in central Osaka.
What to see and do
The building is a plain black box raised above the ground. Walk around it before going in: the shape is the attraction.
A tall central passage runs up through the building, with long escalators linking the floors. It is one of the most photographed interiors in Osaka.
Every show is different, so check what is on before you go. The programme mixes big international exhibitions with smaller shows of Osaka artists.
The museum sits on the island's west side, a short walk from the National Museum of Art, Osaka and the riverside paths.
