Kyoto Railway Museum
The Kyoto Railway Museum, run by JR West beside Umekoji Park, gathers 54 real rail vehicles — from steam locomotives to shinkansen — under one roof and outdoors. Children can climb into some carriages, watch the huge model railway diorama and try hands-on exhibits about how trains run safely.
The star is the historic fan-shaped roundhouse full of steam engines, and the SL Steam train: a real steam locomotive pulls a passenger car on a short ride of about 10 minutes. The Sky Terrace looks out over shinkansen and local trains running in and out of Kyoto Station.
What to see and do
Ride a carriage pulled by a real steam locomotive for about 10 minutes (extra fee; may not be available when busy).
The fan-shaped engine shed (扇形車庫) displays a row of steam locomotives facing a turntable.
One of Japan's largest model layouts (about 30 m wide), with narrated shows of trains running at 1/80 scale.
A Kids Park area on the upper floor, plus the Sky Terrace view of real trains passing Kyoto Station.
Strollers and babies
The official floor guide marks a nursing room, baby chairs and baby-changing sheets, plus a stroller parking area.
