Autumn leavesPhotographersBuddhist art

Eikando (Zenrin-ji) is a temple on the hillside of the Higashiyama mountains, long called 'the temple of autumn leaves'. It is said to have around 3,000 maples, and in November the whole slope turns red and gold.

Its main image is the Mikaeri Amida, a small Buddha statue who looks back over his left shoulder, as if waiting for those who fall behind. Covered corridors link the halls up the slope, and a small pagoda above gives views over the city. In autumn the temple opens special exhibitions of its treasures and lights up the maples at night.

What’s on

Good to know

  • The daytime and night visits need separate tickets; you cannot stay on from one to the other.
  • In November go at 9:00 opening, or on a weekday, to avoid the biggest crowds.
