Kyoto International Manga Museum

Manga and anime fansFamiliesRainy days

The Kyoto International Manga Museum is part museum, part library, inside a former elementary school building in central Kyoto. Its collection runs to hundreds of thousands of items, and tens of thousands of manga line the walls of the corridors.

Most visitors come to read: you pull a volume off the 'Wall of Manga' and settle into a chair, a classroom or, in good weather, the lawn out front. Changing exhibitions look at manga history and artists, and there are shelves of translated manga too.

What to see and do

1The Wall of Manga

Long shelves of manga from the 1970s to today, free to read once you're inside.

2Reading on the lawn

In good weather, take a book outside onto the artificial-turf lawn.

3Permanent displays

Includes 'What is Manga?' and a wall of hand casts of famous manga artists.

4Manga Inking Challenge

A workshop on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays where you try inking a manga page.
