National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto
京都国立近代美術館
The National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto (MoMAK) stands in Okazaki, facing the huge red torii of Heian Shrine across the road. Its collection covers modern Japanese-style painting, Western-style painting, prints, sculpture, photography and especially crafts, with strong holdings of ceramics and textiles from Kyoto and western Japan.
The building is bright and calm, with big windows onto the Okazaki area. It hosts major special exhibitions, while the collection gallery on the fourth floor changes its display several times a year. The Okazaki area is full of museums and gardens, so it fits easily into a day of art.
What to see and do
A rotating display of paintings, prints, sculpture, crafts and photography from the museum's own collection.
Major shows of Japanese and international modern art and design.
The windows look out on the giant torii gate of Heian Shrine.
Open until 20:00 on Fridays, with a lower collection-gallery price in the evening.
