September

Summer fades, moon-viewing nights and quiet value

September starts hot and ends mild. The first half still feels like summer, but evenings cool noticeably, autumn flavors appear in shops, and the harvest moon brings moon-viewing events at temples. It's one of the quietest months for visitors.

It's great for budget-minded travellers and anyone who wants Kyoto with space to breathe. The honest trade-offs: early September is still humid, this is peak typhoon season so a day or two may be disrupted, and the Silver Week holidays can bring a short burst of crowds.

Good to know

  • Typhoons are most likely in September. Watch forecasts, keep a flexible day in your plan and check train status on the day.
  • Silver Week: in 2026 there's a five-day holiday run from Sat 19 to Wed 23 September, so book early if you're coming then.
  • Outside the holidays, this is a great value month with short lines at even famous temples.
