NIFREL

☂ Good on rainy days

NIFREL is a small, stylish "living museum" inside the EXPOCITY complex in Suita, run by the team behind Kaiyukan. Instead of a classic aquarium route, it groups animals by theme — colours, swimming, hiding, poison, waterside life and movement — so children meet fish, reptiles, birds and mammals side by side.

Big draws for families are the white tiger and mini hippos in the Waterside zone, and the Behavior zone, where animals such as ring-tailed lemurs are shown in an open, walk-through setting. A new Poison zone (about 350 m²) opened on 18 March 2026. The whole visit is indoors, so it works well in any weather.

What to see and do

1White tiger and mini hippos

The Waterside zone (みずべにふれる) shows large animals, including a white tiger and pygmy (mini) hippos, at close range through glass.

2Animals on the move

The Behavior zone (うごきにふれる) focuses on how animals move, with ring-tailed lemurs among the residents and an open layout rather than rows of cages.

3Colour and camouflage tanks

Low, round tanks in the Colors and Mimic zones are easy for small children to peer into — spot the fish that hide in plain sight.

4New Poison zone (2026)

Opened 18 March 2026: hands-on displays explain how poisonous creatures attack, defend and camouflage, framed as 'amazing' rather than scary.

Strollers and babies

No stroller rental at NIFREL itself (the LaLaport EXPOCITY mall rents them). Women-only nursing room; dads can use benches in the 2F diaper-changing room, which fits a stroller. Diaper-changing tables are also in the 1F men's and women's toilets.

Good to know

  • Pair it with LaLaport EXPOCITY next door for lunch and rainy-day shopping; the Tower of the Sun in Expo '70 Commemorative Park is just across the monorail line.
  • Same-day re-entry is allowed until one hour before closing, handy for a mall lunch break.
