Walk north to Kuromon Market — by 8 a.m. the tuna is just sliced and the vendor hands you a sample. At dusk the neon of Nippombashi Otaroad flickers on, anime shops and maid cafes mixed into the electronics district. There's none of Shinsaibashi's polish here, but plenty of Osaka's everyday life: steam curling from the sento chimney, half-open shutters on the shopping street, fresh Akashi octopus at the supermarket. In spring, cherry blossoms at Shitennoji and locals' hanami bento; in autumn, a cup of warm sake under the lanterns of Hozenji Yokocho.
